Title: My old WT400/410XLT rig still sounds pretty good
Post by: Jay Stevens on June 12, 2014, 10:40:17 PM
Here's a live recording of the very first time we played songs off our newest album. No pressure!  :o
Some punter during soundcheck told me I was sabotaging the show by being too boomy sounding.
I think it sounded pretty darn good!

Hi Jay,
that sounds great!
I also like the boom but I can't find the Y!
I guess the guy was standing in a bad spot of the room, it can happen.
The recording does sound great, the bass is positioned quite well.
Rock on!!

Bass sounds just great.  Right there in the middle and keeping things moving along!

Good stuff!

Could the key be 'during soundcheck'?  Checking in any half-empty hall the sound is always going to be different to start of show, and that can be different again in a venue that starts off quietly but then gets a crowd of dancers at the front.  We play an old converted Church where most of the audience are seated at an upper level and listening through the house PA, the dynamic changes completely when the downstairs bar guts busy, dancers start dancing and then, towards the end, the upstairs crown are moved downstairs to get ready for going-home time.  And we have to try to control the sound from the stage, where the house mixing desk is, without a sound engineer out front to make adjustments - still great fun!

That is the key. I tried to explain that , but the guy got even angrier to the point where I got...let's say...impolite.
He wouldn't accept that once the blood bags filled the room that the acoustics would change.

Well he clearly wasn't a sound engineer - hang on a minute - maybe he was!!!!

Sounds like a sound man I ran into one time.  He insisted that he'd get the mix settled during the sound check and then didn't need to touch anything during the gig.  Didn't seem to be interested in our set list or anything about how we wanted the various songs to sound.  Good thing I had some firepower on the stage, but lots of folks said they couldn't hear the bass that well, and the guitar solos were simply lost.

Good thing it was only one event - we never went back.  >:(

Sounds great Jay!  Perhaps the soundman was just given a "soundman" T-shirt to wear? :o  Sounds to me like his sound skills matched his manners...

However you had it set, it sounded perfect to me.
