The Eagle has landed! (another Eden success story)
« on: May 09, 2006, 11:07:34 AM »
Here were the contenders:

GK MB150S
Radial Bassbone
Aphex Punch Factory
Avalon U5
Art V3 Studio Tube Preamp
Sans Amp Rack mount preamp
Eden Navigator

OK, it's not a fair fight, but it wasn't all my fault. [:D]

From my previous posts here, you will remember I have been searching for a solution for running my bass direct in our Acoustic gospel group. My poor GK is toast, so it was out. The Radial was either defective, or not worth having. The Aphex is a great stompbox compressor, but that was all it was. I loved the Avalon, deep, rich tone, very thick and room jarring sound. No eq to allow for room conditions being it's only drawback. Sansamp sounds GREAT! But EQ section, again is limited to preset frequencies. Although they are active. The ART is my longtime favorite, and I still plan to keep it. But we all know where this is heading. [}:)]

I innocently bid $525 on a navigator on eVilbay. It is NOT my fault I won it. $546 with shipping. I told my wife I got it for a steal and would resell it, easily turning a sweet profit. When it arrived, I could not believe it's near mint condition (2 years old). Plugging into my home studio yeilded sweet, sweet tone that only comes from the land of milk and honey. I told my wife I would use it for a couple weekends, then sell it, just to see how it sounded with my G&L L2500 fretless. [:)]

Well you see it coming don't you? I played it down the whole time, explaining to my wife, other group members, and our sound girl how I was not keeping the Navigator, that it was going right back on evilbay, seeing that I had won it so cheap, and by accident to boot. All it took was one song at sound check, and everybody is saying: WOW. I mean it! WOW. My wife says: It's a keeper. The sound girl says: "don't touch anything! It sounds great!"

After three performances, nobody wants me to sell the Navigator (poor ole me). I recorded last Saturday's performance, and the bass tone was phenomenal! I kept the Navigator within easy reach, so EQ tweeking, compressor setting, gain, master level are all right at my fingertips. The boost function is out-of-this-world. I have a few solo type bass featurettes, and the boost allows me to rise about the mix effortlessly. I was able to EQ out low freq rumble, add a touch of deep bass when needed, and roll a little sharpness off to smooth out the sweet fat G&L sound. Did I mention the footswitch yet? Completely noiseless operation, tuning checks were a breeze, boost sections a no-brainer, and no-doubt led indicators. Just try to pry this baby outta my paws. [}:)]

So here's the plan

GK - RIP looking for a new home
Radial - back to Musicians Friend
Punch Factory - I will keep as a stand alone DI (or sell)
Avalon - off to eBayville
ART - keep for home studio practice
Sansamp - back to Musicians Friend

The Navi stays nestled in my four space Gator rack bag. the Eagle has landed.

Very very cool. Isn't it nice when a plan works out, even if it wasn't a plan.

Back with a quick up-date. We played outdoors last night at a small festival, and the Navigator just gets sweeter and sweeter. I tried something different that really worked out great. I use jbl EON10G2's for monitors (6 of them), and last night I ran out of the 1/4" main out of the Navigator into the line in of my jbl monitor, with the XLR out feeding the PA. This gave me my monitor mix from the board, and the output of the WP100 both in my monitor (with separate volume controls). This set-up worked and sounded excellanto. The Navigator/EON set-up could possibly make a fairly decent combo amp!
