SOLVED: Popping noise from an E210XST8 just started
« on: June 23, 2019, 12:49:40 PM »
Wile I'm here and asking questions again, another opportunity came up!   :(

This will be a bit wordy but I want to get all the details in.

Last night at an outdoor gig during the beginning of the third set I started hearing a loud popping, cracking or snapping noise from my rig.  Maybe two or three a second to maybe once ever two seconds or so, not a regular thing.  It sounded pretty bad, about equal to the volume of the speakers, but not like a huge BAM from a direct short or anything.  But not a good thing, either.  It did it particularly on the start of the lower notes, but would do it consistently with less popping frequency otherwise.  I couldn't tell exactly which cabinet it was coming from, so I unplugged the E210XST8 and it stopped.

The rig is a 600W Acoustic Image Clarus SL going to the 210 and a D115XLT8.  This was the first time I used the 115 with this setup, previously I'd done a dozen gigs with the 210 and an EX1128, and had no issues.  Still 4 Ohms to the head, and it's rated down to 2 Ohms. I wanted a little more speaker for outdoors.

I was running the setup with the amp Gain and Master on about 5, basically a flat EQ (slightly down on the upper mids and highs.)  The horn pots on both the 115 and the 210 were at about 10% and haven't been moved in ages.  Nothing was being pushed particularly hard.  I had a Boss BA50 in the effects loop, but completely took it out to no avail.  The bass was my favorite, a 30th Anniversary G&L L2000 in passive mode, 85ish% volume, maybe 20% treble, and 90% bass, neck pup selected and in parallel on the windings.  This is my normal setting, I typically only vary the treble pot by genre and occasionally scoop the mids on the amp for a couple of songs, but not at this time.

One difference last night may be important:  The weather was cool, when we started off playing it was about 73 degrees F, and by the time the third set came along it was probably down to the mid 60s, which is cooler than any conditions I've played in a long time.  Pieces -parts get more brittle when cold, right?

So, based on that, what would you guys propose as the most obvious potential issue, and what course of troubleshooting should pursue I try to find out for sure?  Yes, the ear plugs were still firmly in both cab second jacks!

I can replace surrounds if that's the issue, check bulbs, connections, etc.  I'm less likely to be able to determine crossover issues.  Old caps?  Should I have to replace a driver, best to do both?  Go with something like Eminence Legend BP102-4s?  Edit: does anybody know if the drivers are 4s in series or 16s in parallel?  I'm assuming 4s.  Just curious for now.

Thanks in advance, as always, muchly appreciated!

Hi,
your amp has two separate outputs (Stereo or Mono Amp?)?
Remove the front grill of the cab. Move the cones slowly in and out by hand. Do they move freely or do you hear/feel some scratching?
Check the outer ring of the cone. Everything looks normal?
Rock on!

The Clarus SL has two Speakon jacks in parallel and I have one heavy speaker cable going to each cabinet.

OK, I'll pull the cover and see if the  voice coils are rubbing, probably because of a degraded surround.  That would make sense for what I was hearing.  If so I might as well do them both.

I've replaced the surrounds on my Infinity SM150s before, so it's something I can handle.  I'll let you know.  Thanky kindly!

Maybe this might have something to do with it?   :D

Well, if I could get the image to post, you'd see that the wire from the right speaker coil to the little board that the leads plug into had separated from the solder joint!  As it was making or not making contact it could be heard through both speakers.

I had a similar problem with an amp years back -- lose ground wire, in my case. Would cause intermittent noise as the amp vibrated. Drove me bananas for months until a tech sorted it out. He couldn't reproduce the problem on the bench (naturally) -- I had to being in my whole rig, plug in and play. That's when the lightbulb went on for him.

It was actually still rubbing against the solder pot.  If I hadn't wiggled the spade connectors and bumped it I never would have guessed.

The surrounds were in good shape.  I went and tightened every screw and fastener on the cabinet while I was in there.

Great to hear you got it sorted.  It seems like such a simple thing and yet has a huge influence on what you hear.

Thanks for sharing the solution!

Funny, I used to place amps with intermittent faults on washing machines to provoke the problem. Same with old TV sets, hitting the PCBs with an insulated screwdriver in a dark room.
Rock on!

Hopefully the pic will post now.  If not, here's the link.

The end was actually rubbing against the terminal, which is really what was making the noise.

So on it's maiden voyage last night, I plugged it and the D115 in, hit a note and . . . holy crap, I had to turn my volume down quite a bit.  Here that darned thing must have been very "resistive," I was never really that impressed with the 210 since I got it, but not any more!  NOW it sounds like an Eden!!!

Yes, the wire wasn't even tinned on the end, I looked very carefully.  There weren't any pieces of wire in the solder on the rivet when I cleaned it out, so it's not like it broke.  I believe it's called what, a "cold connection" or "cold solder"?  Anyway, it's pretty solid now, I'm not that good at soldering but it worked well this time.

Ha, I not only can't seem to post that pic, I can't see the one you posted either!  Maybe because it's a Dropbox file.

Hmm, I can see the picture.
And yes, it is called cold solder or cold solder joint.
Anyway, I'm happy that it is working fine now.
Rock on!

I can't see it either and it IS because it's a dropbox file.  You can only see dropbox files if you are authorized by the poster or if they allow it to be seen through a link.  Even then, it downloads the image to your computer instead of just opening it and displaying it.

I don't think there is anyway you can actually use dropbox as a third party host of an image file.  It's great for uploading and downloading images and files, but it won't display them because the dropbox is tied into a single "user" and since we are not that user we can't see it.

You can post it on PictureTrail.com if you like and they will host it but their free account allows only a few pics before it becomes an annual fee account.

Glad to hear you got your problem sorted anyhow though.
