Rip Van Dan with J Badders Band
« on: February 18, 2019, 06:15:50 PM »
One of the groups I play with is the J Badders Band and we played a gig at Evelyn's Tavern in Clear Lake, WA on Feb 16th.  Our regular drummer had a heart attack a couple of weeks ago and we had the drummer, Paul,  from the other group I play with sub for him.  It will be 3 to 4 months before our regular drummer, Von, can join in with us again.  One of Paul's friends shot this video with his iPhone.

This is only the second time we've performed it.  We had a fun time playing it.  Hope you enjoy it!

I was playing my Jazz Bass through my WT500/800 into two EX112-4 cabs.  This is after the drummer and I were asked to turn down a bit.  I think  you can still hear me fairly well.

Thanks Jim!

Yeah that's a fun song to play.  We also do White Rabbit by the Jefferson Airplane, which I remember playing back in 1968 in our high school band.  We didn't do Somebody to Love back then because just about nobody except Jack Casady could play that darn bass part. They recorded White Rabbit first, but turned the phone sideways during part of it.  If I can edit White Rabbit so it's all facing the same way, I'll put that up too.

Dan, sorry to hear about your drummer. I hope his rehab goes well.

I can’t believe how much our rigs sound the same. And way to rock it out! That’s not exactly an easy song to cover.

Thanks dbsfgyd1,

Yeah our regular drummer, Von, is going to be out for a few months.  They couldn't get stints in everywhere they needed to by using the heart catheter, so they will have to crack him open to do it.  So he'll soon be a member of the "Zipper Club".  He came to our open mic on Friday and ended up playing a total of 4 songs before the night was done.  Hard to keep him away from the drums.

Yeah, you know, a lot of the "all-Eden rigs" sound surprisingly similar.  I like to think it's because we have so many EQ options available and "great minds think alike!"  I typically run everything flat to begin with and then dial in a little bit of boost around 250Hz.  Plus, have I told you how impressed I am with these Eden EX112 cabs.  I really like them and they were not expensive.

Somebody to Love is not an easy song to cover, but a lot of fun when you're playing with musicians who can pull it off.   I just wish they could have taken some shots where you could see our Keys player Joan, who was singing it.  You can kind of see her head every once in a while.  You know, I've wanted to play that song since it first came out back in 1967 .  Didn't have the skill back then but really wanted to play it.

I recorded Somebody to love with a band here in Richmond last year. I have yet to hear the final mix, but from what I heard from the other musicians they were fairly pleased with my work. MONSTER bass part.  I only had one sort of crash and burn during the last guitar solo, which took one patch to cover. I will say this, you are a man among men pulling this song off.

Did your drummer have his surgery? Hope he rovers fast.

I was fortunate my 93%er was stented in 2008 before any damage occurred. Two more a little further down the stem was installed in 2015.  Doc says if I stay on my meds, stay out of KFC, and get some exercise (like hauling around all this equipment isn’t good enough) once in a while, i’ll Be fine.

Hey dbsfgyd1,
Thanks for the kind words!  I've always liked that bass part from the time that it came out back in 1967.  Didn't have a hope of pulling it off back then.  It's really a fun song to play!

Yeah our drummer Von had a stint put in without cracking his chest and then was told they'd have to crack his chest open to get the rest of them - had 3 others.  One was around 80% blocked  and the other two were around 50%.  Checked with another doc and after looking at the X-ray dye shots, he said he could do that no problem, but no need to mess with the ones around 50%  Diet, drugs, and exercise would keep them from getting worse.

So the "second opinion" doc did the second stint with no problems and Von is back playing drums again.  We had a 3-hour gig last night, which is the most he's played since then, and he had no problem at all.  So his recovery is going along fine.  He considers himself recovered.

Glad to hear you found your blockage first.  A 93% blockage is pretty darn blocked.  Glad they caught it. They had to re-start Von on the way to the hospital.  Definitely not something to aspire to...

Dan, what was scary with mine was I had no heart attack symptoms. No shooting pains down the arms, no chest pains, no sweats, no shortness of breath. EKG was normal pulse rate and O2 sat was normal. Just a little throb in the throat, though I had a little gird thing going on. When the up GI test came back negative, the ran another blood test which found the triponin levels were elevated and rushed me to the catch lab.

Glad Von is back in the saddle. As Armin would say, “Rock on!”!

Wow, glad you caught it.  That triponin level elevates as a heart attack is starting...scary stuff!
