410XLT horn not working?
« on: January 13, 2019, 09:35:02 AM »
Hello. The horn in my older David Eden 410XLT does not work. It did work, then it would work intermittently, and now not at all. I have attempted to clean the L-pad with aerosol electronics cleaner, and I have bypassed the fuse/bulb with copper wire. No change.
Therefore, I would then suspect the horn diaphragm, but the thing is, I can hear a hiss at idle from the horn. The hiss stops when I pull a lead off the horn, so my question is - can the diaphragm be bad, yet still hiss? I would not think so. I get no signal out of the horn at all. Nothing but light hiss at idle. I've got the older style red diaphragm, and older style crossover assembly with banana plugs. I understand that these parts are no longer available so I'd like to repair the crossover if that's what the problem is. Since the horn is hissing, can I rule out the diaphragm? Any advice appreciated.

Hi wengr,

Welcome to the Garden!

Hang in there a bit.  Armin (Bassmann68) should be by soon and he can help you diagnose the problem and give you some options for repair or replacement.

I presume you already know that you should never turn the L-pad control to off.  If you don't want it on, you can set it just slightly above off.  If it gets set to completely off, some internal components will build up too much heat in the L-pad itself and can fry it.  Doesn't sound like that's what's happened with yours , but just wanted to make sure you know about that.

Hi wengr and welcome to the Garden!

Got a multimeter? Check the resistance of the diaphragm.
Horn should be disconnected for the test.
If not feed a signal at very low volume directly to the horn.
Rock on!

Thanks for the replies. Armin, I did as you suggested, and the multimeter shows 4.6 or 4.7 ohms. I tried a low volume signal, and the horn reproduced it as expected. I have to now believe that the problem is elsewhere. Must be the crossover? I have bypassed the fuse/bulb with no improvement. Any suggestion on how to troubleshoot the crossover would be appreciated.

Dan. I am aware that the Lpad should not be left all the way down. It has not been during my ownership, but I am not the original owner. Everything worked fine for years of my ownership, so if the Lpad failed, it did so while set properly. Thanks for the welcome.

From the testing you've done, it does sound like the crossover, since the horn functions with a tone applied directly.

Hi wengr,
please take a picture of both sides of the xover PCB.
Maybe I can see something.

Thanks Armin but I have already put it back together as I need it for a gig tonight.
Here is what I have done recently:
I removed the LPad, opened it, and it looked fine inside. I then measured it with the multimeter, and the resistance changed as expected as I turned the knob.  I don't think there is any issue with it.
Then I used my looper to feed basslines through the crossover while I did my best to check and probe for bad or cold solder joints, or any problems with the board etc. None that I can find.

Then finally I put it back together because I need to use it, and the horn is now working. Why I don't know, but it is for now.  I suspect an intermittent open that I cannot yet find. If it fails again maybe I'll reflow all the solder joints. Right now it's back in the truck and fingers crossed. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. Greg
