Two WT800 in one 410XST
« on: November 10, 2017, 04:42:00 AM »
Hello fellow Edenians,
for my next tour I would like to try a new set up, but I am not sure if it works out or if it might cause any trouble to my beloved equipment.
My standard set up is a WT800 with 2x 410XST amplifying a MusicMan Stingray 5 String HH. So far so good. But now I will play at some songs a double bass and the WT800 makes a tremendous job in shaping the sound of the double bass. So I would like to use the internal DI post EQ to send out the sound of the double bass to the FOH. My idea was to use a second WT800 (it will be rented for the tour) for the double bass and connect it to the upper cabinet of my standard stack.

So the question is: Can I connect two amps with one cabinet?
Of cause the amps will never play at the same time. Btw I own a newer version of the 410XST with two speakon plugs.

Why not using just one amp for both instruments? Cause the EQ setting is way to different and I dont have the time in between the songs to change it. And for the sound engineers it is better to send two independent lines.

I hope you got what I mean. After asking many technicians already nobody knew if it might cause trouble to connect one cabinet with two amps at the same time. You are my last hope Eden-Wan Kenobi... ;-)

This is a quote from an Eden speaker manual - "BASIC CONNECTIONS AND OPERATION
There are three speaker connections on the connection panel: two standard 1/4 inch jacks and one NL4 connector. These connections are all wired together in parallel. This means that any of the connections can accept the input from your amplifier and that the remaining two connections can be used to connect to additional speaker cabinets if desired. NEVER CONNECT TWO AMPLIFIERS TO ONE CABINET."  Don't do it!
However connecting two instruments with different EQ needs can be addressed using other technology - Tonebone seem to specialise in this sort of thing - http://www.tonebone.com/switchers-products.php

Don‘t do it. Never!
Not even when one amp will be switched off all the time.
Again, don’t even think about it!

Now a solution.
Take the second WT800 or maybe a WP100 Navigator and connect your Upright to it. From the headphone out feed the signal to Aux in or Fx return of the first WT800.
That way you got two DI outputs and separate tone control for each instrument.
Rock on!

Okay. Thanx for the answer. Seems like I had a very bad idea.

I will try the option with FX send and return. Or with a Lehle A/B switch and setting it up like this:
Line a) E-Bass --> DI Box --> EQ  --> Lehle --> Amp
Line b) Upright --> Lehle --> Amp --> internal DI post EQ

Like this the engineers need to turn on and off the upright if needed.

I'll let the experts tell us if this will work or not, but what if you connect the rented WT800 Post FX Send to the Post FX Return of the first WT800?  Don't connect any speakers to the rented WT800, just use it as a pre-amp with the power amp from the first WT800.

I’m not so sure what the rental charge is on a WT 800, but i’ll guess you can about pay for a WTDI, and use that for a pre-amp. Then you will have it for future use.
