Eden amp output at different impedances
« on: September 06, 2017, 07:19:25 PM »
I have just ordered the TN501 head and should get it in about a week. I am still assessing what cabinet(s) I'll need, based on the venues I'm likely to play, but one thing to consider is impedance.

Keeping it simple, the 501 puts out 500W at 4Ω. The TN410 cabinet (for example) comes in 4Ω and 8Ω variants, so I could get one 4Ω cabinet or two 8Ω cabinets. The two 8Ω cabinets would move a lot more air (not to mention look damned impressive!) but realistically will be overkill for 90% of the gigs I'm likely to play. That, and I haven't won the lottery yet. So if I have two 8Ω cabinets, but at most gigs I only use one of them, what is the output of the 501 through that one cabinet?

It seems all other manufacturers list the output of their amps at different impedances, e.g.:
  • Fender Rumble 500 and Gallien Krueger MB500: 500W at 4Ω, 350W at 8Ω.
  • Ampeg Portaflex PF500: 500W at 4Ω, 300W at 8Ω.
  • Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 and Warwick LWA500: 500W at 4Ω, 250W at 8Ω.

I can't seem to find a comparative specification for the Eden amps. It's not a deal breaker for me - I've already ordered the amp - but I'm interested to know, and it will help form my decision on the cabinets.

The new Eden/Marshall manuals and specs don't provide very much information, but a general rule of thumb would be about 1/2 the power output at 8 ohms and full power at 4 ohms.

Whether it's half or more than half of what the 4 ohm output is depends upon the power supply in the amp.  My amp has the same power section and supply as a WT800A and it puts out 400-watts per channel into 4 ohms and 240-watts per channel into 8 ohms.  So that's about 20% more than half the watts.  If that ratio holds true for the new amps, then it would be ~300-watts at 8 ohms, but that's totally conjecture.  Armin might be able to track that down though and get you a specific answer.

There you go.  Armin has the answer.  I knew he'd have the skinny on it.  It's 250-watts.

FWIW, I primarily use my TN501 with my four-ohm D410 XLT, and it's PLENTY loud and LOADS of booty. Unless you're playing the Enormodome, I can't imagine you'd need more.

Thanks to everyone who answered, particularly Armin.

There seems to be a shortage of Eden cabinets in my town at the moment (actually in my country). The retailer I'm getting the head from has one 8Ω TN501 (the main reason for my original question) and is trying to see whether he can find a 4Ω version somewhere. The other retailer who carries Eden just shrugged.

I figure with the 4Ω cab I'll get the most out of the head and (for the venues I play) would probably never need anything else. I'll know more when the head arrives in a couple of days and I get to try it out with the 8Ω TN501 in-store. My only local and immediately available 4Ω option is an Ampeg SVT410HLF.

Can't you just get the dude at the first store to order you one in four ohms? That's what I did.

What country are you in?
