Volume lowering and gain led not clipping with Eden WT400
« on: April 01, 2017, 09:13:26 AM »
Hello, i have an Eden WT400, which i use with an Alusonic cabinet ALU112-XL (600W at 4ohm). Vintage head with modern cabinet, connected via speakon-jack cable.

When i turn on the WT 400 and i set the gain, making it clipping only when i'm extra-violent, the gain knob is at 9 o' clock. Then i play for a while (usually 15-30 minutes), and what happens is that volume start lowering, making me turn up the gain knob. In the end, if i put both gain knob and master knob at their maximum level, volume is lower than my Roland Microcube combo.

I have this problem regularly, everytime a try to play with my eden.
I noticed a couple of things:
1-when i "trigger" this issue, gain led doesn't clip anymore. No way.
2-this problem takes a shorter time to trigger if i play hard (for example when i slap)

I brought to a technichan my full rig head+cabinet, and he said that he didn't monitorize anything strange. (he didn't try to PLAY, just electronic tests)

Do you have any ideas?

Hi sbato and welcome to the Garden
your Amp needs service.
We recommend an Eden Service Center.
They are the only ones with schematics and proper knowledge of the amps.
Where are you living?

I'm from italy. I was thinking about trying another technician, i didn't consider the Eden Service option.
Though, i guess that shipping cost and repair from Eden would cost a bit more...

Hi sbato,

Welcome to the Garden!

Hope you get your gain problem sorted quickly.   An Eden service center is pretty much a "must" in a situation like yours.  If you have an average time of playing when it starts acting up, be sure to mention that to them.

Thank you, i've sent an email to local Eden support service.

It couldn't be a dead tube? This was my first thought.
The technician said that tubes in my amp are right, but maybe he could be wrong...

I guess cold solder joints.
Let us know what they find.

The technician said that tubes in my amp are right, but maybe he could be wrong...

That's not normally caused by a bad tube.  Plus there is only one tube in your amp and it is NOT in the gain section.  It's in the impedance section and operates at specific parameters that really have nothing to do with how the gain works.

Usually when tubes go bad, they tend to go microphonic.  You'll sometimes get feedback and other sounds like there's a mic inside your amp.  I had a tube go bad in my 1966 Fender Bassman back in abou 1971 and it would give this low and loud hum.  Was actually about a 200Hz feedback.  I'd jostle the tube slightly and it would go away.  Took me a couple of weeks to get a new tube and then all was good again.  So, I'd believe your tech if he said he tested it and it's fine.

Armin is one of our best electronics guru's here in the Garden, so I'd pay particular attention to his suggestions.   Cold solders are solders that are no longer conducting electricity well so some or all of the signal is blocked.  Old solders can also crack from age and handling and basically these solders need to be re-soldered to work correctly.  Your WT400 is an older amp and it's not uncommon for some connections to need re-soldering after many years  of use.

Finally they checked my amp and told me what they have to fix.

There are technical terms, so i'm not able to translate the answer from italian to english  ::)
I'll try, but probably it won't make any sense...
-Fix power supply feeding stage
-Fix valve stage
-Valve substitution

Here's in italian:
-Riparazione stadio alimentazione filamento
-riparazione stadio valvola
-sostituzione valvola.
