Combo Amp That Can Accomodate an Extension Cab
« on: February 18, 2017, 04:17:12 PM »
I've kind of become a latent fan of combo amps. I think there is an advantage to an integrated design that's well executed in terms of providing good reliability, superior tone and simplicity. I know it's really hard to compete on the basis of quality in a world of $300 combo amps but if Laney and others do it - why not Eden of all companies? I'd love to see Eden develop combos that offered the flexibility to add an extension cabinet that would effectively double the output. Many of us practice and rehearse with combos and the ability to double the output often is enough added presence for many gig situations. Eden would sell more cabs as a result. Just one man's thought.

+1.  The pricey Terra Nova combos mute the internal speaker if you plug in an extension cabinet, and the more affordable E-series combos don't have extension capability.  It's desirable to have combos with an 8-ohm internal speaker and matching 8-ohm extension cabinet.  Good request.  Cheers, Bob

The E series 115 and 210 combos do have an extension speaker out but just like the TN series, it disconnects the internal speaker.  Reason for that is that the internal speaker is 4 ohm to get all the power out of the amp that it has to offer.  So that sucks for expandability.

Would be nice if Eden had a combo with an 8 ohm speaker with decent power out of the amp at 8 ohms but double the power if another 8 ohm cab was hooked up to run the amp at 4 ohms.  Hmmmm...didn't Bob just say that? ::)

Yeah, but thanks for correcting my misimpression about the E-series combos.  I missed the extension jack since it wasn't mentioned in the brief specs like on the Terranova page and I didn't look at the larger picture of the back panel (or read the manual--who does that?).  ;)

A popular bass amp manufacture has a 2 newer combo series out (V3) that can drive both the internal speaker and an extension cab. However the amps' outputs at 4 ohms (with external cab) are just 43% more than at 8 ohms (internal speaker only). IMHO, a 43% increase in wattage isn't enough to justify the expense of an additional cabinet. A certain British manufacturer does it right (imo) with a hybrid combo that puts out 250 watts into 8 ohms (internal speaker) and 500 watts into 4 ohms (internal and external speaker).

Oh well, I've said enough on this topic. I'm sure Eden has a reason for not wanting to drive external cabs while simultaneously driving the internal speaker of a combo.

The reason is simple, to get most out of the combo as it is.
I always see a combo for what it is, a combo.
Designed for practice and small gigs.
Those combos have such a good price you could run two of them if more power is needed.
Rock on!

-1.  I like and have used expandable combos in many situations, starting with my Eden Metro (which could handle 2 ohms and a multitude of extension cabs!) and SWR Workingmans 12.  It's nice to have options.  ;)

But compare the price!

I wish Eden were more upfront with detailed specs on its gear. I didn't know that the EC combos had 4 ohm internal speakers. Furthermore, The EC combo manual that is dowloadable online says nothing about how using the ext speaker jack defeats the internal speaker. In fact it specifically reads "EXT speaker out- Connect your amplifier combo with another cabinet for a bigger sound" and "Ext Speaker Out • Allows you to connect to an additional speaker cabinet". I'm sorry but that is  darned near misleading!
