I may be insane - or not!
« on: October 19, 2015, 01:03:27 PM »
I said a while ago: Last for a while, when I got the Warwick SS1. I lied. Obviously. First I traded some stuff and got my old long lost Matt Pulcinella Level 6 back in the stable. Then I found two "project basses": a fretless Fernandes Jazz Bass and a Fender M.I.J. Precision '51. Here they are:

The one on the floor: Level 6...

Well, here are the brethren...
They were CHEAP. So cheap you didn't have to think twice before buying them. I've ordered two new bridges so they will be more playable: one Babicz Full Contact for s-t-b use and one for stringing through the bridge. Not stylistically correct, but definitely more useable...

Well, obviously, I am insane.

But not completely insane. I have dreamed about a Dingwall for many years, and I sold off a lot of the wall warmers and some nice stuff too to get one. I didn't lose a penny on all my "affairs"(!!!). However, all three basses above, my D. Lakin and my Lakland JO5 has been sold, and this gem is on the way home:

Dingwall Voodoo Prima 6 from 2001. Paid for, both kidneys left...  8) 8) 8)

In the revolving carousel of Roger's recently owned basses, I bet you hang on to the Dingwall for a good long time.  She's a beauty!  :P :P :P

And let us know how much time it takes to get used to the fret setup.
Congrats!

Well, now the Voodoo Prima has moved in. All oddball basses I've gotten myself - and a few others - have been sold to make this happen. And - I didn't lose a dime! Here it is with its new stablemates...

Prima is actually a tad shorter than Black Bob, although the scale is 37"...

Played a friends Dingwall Zebra 5 a number of years ago.  Fanned frets were a wee bit odd at first, but it really didn't take long for it to feel normal.

Enormous B string tone with that 37" B string!!!!  :o

No - it is not at all enormous. Slightly shorter overall than the Lakie Bob Glaub, despite the 37" scale. Now with some three weeks playing it feels very much as business as usual...

No, the bass itself is not long, but with the fanned frets and the angled bridge and nut, the B string itself is long, the bridge on the B string almost reaches the very bottom of the bass, and that produced an amazing low B note/tone - with great sustain as well.

Every time I see a fanned-fret instrument, I feel like someone messed with perspective :)  That's a very nice bass!  One of these days, I'll get around to trying one out.  The only place I've seen one locally is the kind of place where I didn't feel worthy of touching any of the gear.
