just got a D210xlt, cone blew instantly
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:41:17 PM »
Just got a new WT550 head and found a D210xlt at a consignment shop.

Well, the cab sounded fine in the shop, but the guy was rushing me and telling me not to crank it too loud.  I was suspicious but I figured, hey, for this deal it's probably worth the risk.  As soon as I plugged it in, and set the volume at a conservative 12 oclock on the gain and master, dug into a couple notes... I started to hear some buzzing...  Seems the right cone is making a ton of noise.

Anyways, tour starts this week and I'm basically running a 1x10.  :(

Called Eden, they said it will be mid or late may before I can get a new driver and they are no longer offering reconing.  I'm wondering if maybe I blew the crossover and the cone is fine?  Anyway, if anybody has a 2x10xlt speaker they'd sell me, or knows where I can recone it in the San Francisco area, help would be appreciated!

Shoulda got something, anything, with a warranty [:(]

My amp tech used to carry Eden when he did backline and has a NOS 10" xlt speaker, pretty sure it's 8 ohm but I could be wrong. You could probably get that one for about $100 tomorrow. Gary Lowe, 602 - eight six one - 3056 ext three. He's a really good guy. We're in Phoenix, so ship time to SF shouldn't be bad.

12:00 on both the gain and the master on a WT550 is not a particularly conservative level on an Eden amp.  Many Eden amps actually are very close to their maximum output at about 12:00 on the master.

A D210XLT is only rated at 350 Watts RMS power.

You didn't mention the impedence of the 210, but if it was a 4 ohm, the WT550 would have been pushing close to 500 watts of power at it.

However, if it is an 8 ohm cab, then it really should have been OK.

This is a reasonable generalization and probably true more times than not, however, not always the rule. If you have an on-board bass pre-amp that has a 'trim' and can be adjusted to get maximum gain from the pick-ups, you could potentially send a hotter signal to the amp and find that your amps maximum Gain and Master levels may require an adjustment less than "12:00".  Of course your ears are your best guide when trying to determine this.  I just wanted to add this as another factor to consider.

OK, I had to chime in . . . I run a 2007 WT550 + a 212XLT 4 ohm and a 210XST 4 ohm all the time. Using the same bass . . . enhance off, 12:00 on everything . . . it is loud.

I've used it once at an outdoor gig, the (3) guitards turned way up, and I ended going to about 1 - 1:30 on Gain (no lights) and just about at 3:00 on the Master, everything else at 12:00, and it was much, much, much louder. The guitards kept asking me to turn down - NOT!

The only mod I've done to the amp is change the stock tube for a matched triode JJ ECC83S tube! I also keep two 6 inch fans blowing on it at all times, esp in the summer!
