VICTORY!!!!!!!!A scuba diving WT800 and power amp
« on: July 26, 2010, 11:15:34 AM »
We'll I fell victim to my rehearsal spot flooding. 4 ft of water a week before we plan on moving out. Chicago got dumped on this week. Lucky for us the rain happened 2 days after our most recent gig and almost all of our gear was not there. However, 2 of my drummers toms where in the basement, and my 12 sp rack which housed one Samsung 1000w power amp and my beloved WT800A. (Officially my back up amp).

I spoke with my techs here and they suggest I remove the cover of the amps and place the electronics in front of the AC vent so the dry air pulls the moisture out. They also mentioned using the little packets that suck up moisture that come with purchased goods, and possibly putting dry rice in there as well.

I won't be turning these guys on for at least 3 weeks. Hopefully then I can move this topic over to the Eden survival story section!!.

Do you have a dehumidifier?  If so, put the amp in a room with it and crank it up.  Similar to putting it infront of the A/C unit but probably better.

I think that likely falls outside "normal service parameters" [;)]

I've got my fingers crossed that this does become a survival story and not loss.

I have no idea if this will definitely work or not, but what about a hair dryer/heat gun? Couldn't hurt. Also, I'd try to make absolutely sure there is no water in the PT. Maybe take it out and/or turn it over a few times. At least the WT800A doesn't have carbon-comp resistors, does it? I know they can start to make funny noises just from being stored in a humid basement. The caps look like they are sealed and maybe won't soak up any water, but LOOK OUT! if they did.
One more idea - how about putting it in the oven, on bake, say at 200 degrees F, just for a half hour or so.
I wish I had better ideas, maybe someone else can chime in.
Best of luck.

The issue with heat dryers is you run the risk of warping the boards and or components.

Tim,

I'd recommend rinsing the entire amp off with distilled water before drying it out.  That way you can completely wash away any salt residues and dirt left by the flood water and lower the likelihood of a component failure when you turn it on again.

Sorry to hear that Tim.
My recommendation is to Spray all contacts and pots with Deoxide.
Then dry it with the AC and not to much heat.

I highly suggest putting it in a container full of rice. The rice will suck up all of the moisture, leaving the amp dry.

This has worked for myself and countless other people I have suggested it to. Granted it has been used on smaller items such as digital cameras or cell phones, but it has worked every time.

Do I pour the rice into the amp, or place the amp with the top off in a container filled with rice?
