It didn't take too long........
« on: November 03, 2009, 09:37:47 PM »
.....to think of my favorites.

"Working Class Hero" by John Lennon. A voice, a guitar and lyrics so stark and true as to make me cry when I first heard it. I think I was 16 at the time. Until hearing this song, I didn't think anyone understood.

"Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney. With declarations of love being the most recuring theme in poular music, there is hardly a more powerful example.

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow". One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest films of all time. If I have to explain, you just wouldn't get it anyway.....

Honorable mention:
"Monster" by Steppenwolf. A masterpiece as an ode to this country. Both critical and admiring of its past, suspicious and fearful of its present and hopeful that we can save it from itself.

These are, as JTE mentioned, songs so great in and of themselves that they stand as such no matter how they are arranged and produced.
I do want to mention a song, though, which is a total package of pop music perfection. Everything about its lyrics, melodies, harmonies, vocal and instrumental arrangements and structure, to the goosebumps it gives even the most jaded listener, from its opening notes, through its various movements, make this song perfect in every way EXACTLY as it was recorded........

"(We Must Never Break) The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac.

I love the old-world feel of the Celtic intro, the incredible tension the bass break starts and builds into the rousing ending choruses.
OK, so how do I REALLY feel about this record......[:D]

I'm always amazed that anyone outside DC knows of Eva Cassidy. Yes, she died too young.

I spent an hour at Borders looking for Eva's "Live At Blues Alley" CD.  I'd heard the version of "Take Me To The River" and "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" from that album on the local NPR station (plug here for WGLT- News, Blues, and all that Jazz).

Borders had it in "Folk"...  That's why I hate using genres to try to describe artists.  The best ones work in those borders between genres'.    I LOVE Eva's voice and delivery.   Her take on Sting's "Fields of Holly" is as powerful as "Redemption Song" (great choice!!) and "Dr. Feelgood" from Aretha's live album.

I've got amost all of Eva's published stuff, except the most recent Somewhere (2008), which is all unreleased stuff that showcases the range of music she embraced.

Absolutely amazing voice, phrasing, dynamics!  She could sing almost any style - wonderfully.

What a loss![:(]
