Off-topic folder or not, I think we should avoid sexuality, religion and politics. Whether it's right or wrong, a joke or not, us or them, it just doesn't matter. This is not our forum, it is Eden's. We are here as their ambassadors and I have a hard time believing that this is what they intended.

Stuart, Micheal...........[;)] I believe anything which can be said about this has been said so, Lane, please....don't you sometimes declare a topic "worn out, retarded or otherwise of no redeaming value" and just kill it?

The blame for this messy thread should fall at the feet of Bryan. But before we all jump on him, some consideration should be given to the fact that he likely has absorbed a lot of heavy metals into his system over the years. [:0][}:)][:)][:D]

Hey.........Some of you guys have given me alot of giggles and belly laughs over the months I've been hanging around the forum. Bryan and Al especially. You guys have a great sense of humor! Most of the time.
Unstopablebassmonolith explained the problem some of us have with the illwill of this thread as well as I could. Nudge nudge... "They put one of THEM on the cover of OUR magazine". Jim, you said you must have missed something. If you still don't get it, go back and read Stuart's post. He took the words right out of my mouth.

BTW-M'chelle has more bass playing, songwriting, performing talent in the crud under her fingernail than most all of us on this forum have collectively in our whole bodies!

Unstoppable, thank you for you post. I don't have a lot of sensitivity to the whole subject of Lesbianism in general, so I didn't interpret things the same as others might have.

Since we were talking about Lesbians, the post that said "there's one on the cover of our mag this month" didn't seem inappropriate to me.  If we had been talking about left handed bassists and someone had said "there's one on the cover of our magazine this month", I don't think anyone would have batted an eye.
Interpreting "People's Republic of Lesbia" to equate lesbianism with Communism or Totalitarianism is something I wouldn't have come up with either, although I can see where some people would, now that I think about it.  To me the word just sounds "Eastern Bloc"ish.  Lesbian, Serbian, Hungarian, Ukrainian, etc. To me, the joke wouldn't have worked as well with "The United States of Lesbia" for that reason only.  BTW, the origin of Lesbian comes from from Lesbos, the Greek island and home of Sappho, who expressed affection for women in her poetry. (yes, I had to look that up).

I've read posts on this forum that I considered to be of questionable taste, and to be honest, when I saw the subject of this thread I was a little apprehensive. But when I opened it I thought "oh - that was ok".  So I was curious what I missed when people starting getting upset.  I'm not offended very easily myself, but I try to be considerate of others.

Anyway - I apoligize for partially highjacking and then perpetuating this thread.  Plus, I really should get back to work.

Jim

You guys are great.  Thanks for taking my post in the spirit of information, for staying light-hearted even though I wasn't so successful in my post, and for understanding that things often can mean very different things for different people.

"My problem is largely with this post. It is creating and living in a frame of reference where lesbians are not one of "us"- the use of "guys" like no women could be reading this or read BP; "our mag", like it doesn't also belong to any lesbians who buy it- "there is one" like lesbians are Martians or some kind of animal. The equating of lesbianism with Communism and totalitarianism in the original joke is also offensive- would the joke be as funny if it were the United States of Lesbia? If you think no, maybe you need to wonder why.

Would any of you refer to a picture of John Pattitucci on the cover of BP by saying, "You guys know there's one of those heterosexuals on the cover of our mag this month, right?" I didn't think so.

The tone of this and some of the other posts shows a smug feeling of superiority and non-inclusiveness, that "ridicule the fat kid on the playground" vibe, that I personally find offensive. It's not a "laughing with them" vibe, it's a "laughing at them" vibe that is causing the negative posts. Does that clear things up for you Jim?

I mean, what is so wrong with lesbians? I often think of myself as a lesbian trapped in a man's body. (Ok that was also an off-color and inappropriate joke.) Can we please just let this thread die?"

Stuart,

Please accept my apology. I had no idea my 13 word statement would be so interpited, as that was not my intention. I guess I used a bad choice of pronouns.
