"Daddy, where do lesbians come from?"
« Reply #15 on: October 24, 2007, 12:04:43 PM »
Let me get this straight.

A joke with the premise that a child might think that Lesbian refers to a nationality and not sexual orientation.

A couple of other statements referring to the location of known gay/lesbian communities.

And someone mentioning that there's a lesbian on the cover of a magazine.

I guess I must've missed the "lesbian-mocking, adolescent, macho, insecure-with-one's-own-masculinity/sexuality theme" part of the thread. Seemed rather innocuous to me.

Respectfully submitted.

Jim

Perhaps the O/T topic about "Priorities" would help put this thread in perspective?

In all seriousness, to the offended, if you can explain to me in a clear and calm tone what exactly you find so offensive about this thread, I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say.  Although I can't speak for others on this forum, I know I'm not stupid, so there's a good chance I would understand your perspective.  In that case, whether or not I agree with you, I'd be more likely to respect your opinion.
The name calling hasn't helped me understand anything, although I did find it a bit ironic.

Honestly, this topic was there before the firestorms or the 'priorities' one...

I guess when life cools down, and there's nothing 'hot' to talk about, so people start talking about lesbians.
It is unavoidable...

Bryan must have been the victim this time!

It's a terrible tragedy that has affected the whole family, and has certainly brought things into perspective for me!

Can anyone read the above and honestly worry about where lesbians do or do not come from? This story truly dwarfs the loss of a home in a firestorm. [:(][V]

WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THIS THREAD??  Why would you even BRING it into this thread???  How the hell can you corrupt a JOKE thread into this F-in mess???

Too many of you people have your heads WAY to far up your own asses.  It was a F-in JOKE.  If you can't handle a JOKE, get the F off the planet cuz life is far too short to be wound up this tight and be this sensitive and picky and politically correct.

Jesus Christ it's F-in pathetic that you people could get this upset about a joke.  You must be boring stale people to know in real life.

Ahhh...Bryan, maybe you misunderstand my comment. I get the joke. I think it's funny. This is the Off Topic area of the forum, after all. I'm poking fun at how many get up in arms and take sides about something so trivial compared to much more important things in life. Smile. Relax. Some of us are laughing along with you. And never forget...any and all threads are susceptible to being corrupted. [:0][;)][:)]

My problem is largely with this post.  It is creating and living in a frame of reference where lesbians are not one of "us"- the use of "guys" like no women could be reading this or read BP; "our mag", like it doesn't also belong to any lesbians who buy it- "there is one" like lesbians are Martians or some kind of animal.  The equating of lesbianism with Communism and totalitarianism in the original joke is also offensive- would the joke be as funny if it were the United States of Lesbia?  If you think no, maybe you need to wonder why.

Would any of you refer to a picture of John Pattitucci on the cover of BP by saying, "You guys know there's one of those heterosexuals on the cover of our mag this month, right?"  I didn't think so.

The tone of this and some of the other posts shows a smug feeling of superiority and non-inclusiveness, that "ridicule the fat kid on the playground" vibe, that I personally find offensive.  It's not a "laughing with them" vibe, it's a "laughing at them" vibe that is causing the negative posts.  Does that clear things up for you Jim?

I mean, what is so wrong with lesbians?  I often think of myself as a lesbian trapped in a man's body.  (Ok that was also an off-color and inappropriate joke.)  Can we please just let this thread die?
