Punch Factory VS Navigator
« on: August 04, 2007, 11:42:59 PM »
Well, I thought since our Acoustic Gospel group switched from floor monitors to Aviom in-ears, I could switch over from using my Navigator, and get by with my Aphex Punch Factory. Boy was I wrong. Punch Factory will go on Ebay very soon, very cheap. Our sound guy hated it. [:(]

Kinda weird that you don't like the Punch Factory. I've got it too and I love it! What did your soundguy hate about it? What did you hate about it? My opinion is that it gives me very smooth compression with no added noise or nosiness. The DI is clean and accurate as well too. Odd...

Unlord... there are many who believe the Nav is the best bass pre-amp out there... with outstanding tone and an excellent control set -- especially for the compressor. Once you've gotten spoiled, it's hard to accept anything else.

yea, Lane is probably right, in the South we say: "Grits and grease is fine until you try grits with butter" [:)]

As for the Punch Factory, it must effect the sound somewhat. I say this because at practice sometimes I am lazy, and just plug my bass cord directly into the mixer, and it sounds great. Maybe my G&L is just too hot (I run passive btw), 'cause I noticed the Aphex running full compression even at a very low 'drive' setting (8 or 9 o'clock) even bypassed it seemed to suck my tone. All night, I am hoping the FOH sound is better that my in-ear sound, because one of my old bass-playing buds is in the audience, but on the way home, our sound guy breaks the bad news too me as we are listening the Cd of the performance. No punch, lousey tone.

Actually, I have an ART V3 Studio Tube that sound much better, but it will not run on phantom power.

All that said, I feel certain the Punch Factory is a great piece of gear, but it just does not work for me personaly.

Probably USER ERROR

Almost nothing works perfectly for anyone I guess. Good thing you found that out. I must confess that I am not always that picky on my sound, but then again, I am not a pro. And if you would know anything about what the other guys in my band are using and the crap they produce with it sometimes, you'd bring your southern rifle and make this world a better place [:D]

I have found in most cases when people love their Eden gear, no simulators or other gear gives them the purity of tone they seek.
